Breast Augmentation Procedure

Breast Augmentation Fort Lauderdale

A breast augmentation is a one-day outpatient procedure done either under local or general anesthesia. Generally, there are only four places where an incision can be made. A woman who has very little breast tissue may develop wrinkling of the implant beneath the skin referred to as rippling. In order to prevent this from occurring, doctors will place the implant between the breast tissue and the muscle. This placement is one of the most useful in helping the implant remain in place. Another placement is in the sub-pectoral plane. Due to movement of the pectoral muscle, some patients cannot handle this placement. The final placement is beneath the pectoral muscle. Surgeons prefer to follow through with any other technique because it requires lifting the muscle tissues from the rib cavity. This sometimes causes the breast to move in very unnatural ways.

Types of incisions

Patients have the option of choosing one of the four incision areas. At Broward we have doctors that specialize in certain types of incisions when performing breast augmentations.

Periareolar Insicion

The first is the inframammary incision which involves and incision below the inframammary fold, or along the bottom of the breast. The surgeon creates a pocket where he is going to place the implant, and then slides the implant up placing it right behind the nipple. This scar can easily be hidden under a bra strap or bathing suit and allows the doctor to work closely to the breast providing better visibility and accuracy.

Inframammary Insicion

The second technique is the periareolar incision which runs along the border of the areola. This scar is easily hidden between the dark are of the areola and the outer skin. One of the greatest advantages of this incision is the ability of the surgeon to work directly under the breast allowing for great visibility leading to better results and minimal scarring. Although this is one of the best techniques, there is a 2-5% chance that patients will lose nipple sensation temporarily or permanently.

Transumbilical Insicion

The third is the transumbilical technique, also known as the TUBA(Transumbilical Breast Augmentation) procedure, involves a very small scar in the belly button. The surgeon inserts the implant through the belly button using an endoscope where it is tunneled up into the breast area. This technique also produces a scarless breast augmentation Fort Lauderdale but is more difficult when working with silicone gel breast implants.

There is also a transaxillary technique wich involves an incision in the armpit. From this incision the breast implant can be transported to the breast area. This technique provides an almost scarless breast augmentation but requires some tuning during the procedure. The scar is easily hidden in the creases of the armpit.

Breast Augmentation Cost

The breast implants cost is dependent on several factors. In the United States, the average breast augmentation costs between $3,500 and $10,000. The type of implant used is one of the main determinants of the price. Silicone gel implants are usually more expensive with a price ranging from $800 to $2,000 more than saline breast implants. The size of each implant can also raise the price. If you purchase a guarantee along with the breast augmentation surgery, the price will increase. But some guarantees come free with the implants. If you seek a breast augmentation as a reconstructive surgery, insurance will most likely cover the cost. But when performed for cosmetic reasons, insurance will no cover this procedure. Schedule a consultation with one of Broward’s board certified plastic surgeons to receive a price for your breast augmentation procedure.

How to prepare for a Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation in Florida

Before a breast augmentation, patients should follow certain procedures in order to ensure the safest and most satisfactory results. Safety of our patients and doctors is our number one concern here at Sunrise Plastic Surgery. That is why we encourage patients to follow all safety procedures at their best ability. Patients must stop smoking at least one month prior to the scheduled surgery date. Smoking increases the risk of complications and reduces the level of oxygen to the blood and can cause delayed healing and poor scarring. It is also important to stop taking aspirin or blood thinners two weeks prior to surgery as this can cause complications during and after surgery such as excessive bleeding. Preparing your home is also very important in making your recovery much more comfortable and smooth. Before you head to surgery leave your bed prepared with extra blankets, pillows and towels along with any medications and any items you may need during the first few days of recovery. Patients must arrange transportation after surgery and be supervised and assisted for the first 24 hours. Following all the proper procedures will aid in the best healing process and yield great results.

How long do Breast Implants last?

For some patients, breast implants can have a life of 20+ years while others may need a second surgery after several years. There is no specific way of knowing how long any particular type of implant will last. Some individuals may develop painful scar tissue or ruptures which would require surgical removal or replacement. In the event that a saline implant was to rupture, the body would naturally absorb the water. Silicone on the other hand, would require the patient to have an MRI scan in order to detect and confirm that the implant has torn or ruptured. This would require a second surgery to remove the implant and insert a new one if the patient desires.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

For the first 48 hours post-surgery, patients must remain at bed rest. Although it is important to rest the first couple days, there must be some movement to keep blood circulation. With assistance, patients should walk around for about 10-15 minutes several times a day. During this time the patient may feel fatigued and a bit uncomfortable, this is normal. Pain medication will be provided to help reduce pain levels. For about the first three weeks, there will be some restriction to certain movements and the patient may need help to perform household tasks. Stitches will be removed within those weeks. If the patient does not have a physically strenuous job, they may return after about three to four days. After just a few months, incisions should be healed and swelling should be reduced. Depending on the patient and type of procedure, recovery may be faster or slower. Generally, the transumbilical technique, or TUBA, has the quickest recovery time and least risk of complications. Patients must keep in mind that breast may continue to grow as years past or may get smaller with weight loss.

Risks related to Breast Augmentation Fort Lauderdale

Just like any other type of surgery, there are potential risks and complications that come alongside a breast surgery. Patients must keep in mind that there is no guarantee to satisfactory results. Some patients may be unhappy with the results requiring additional surgery. A more serious possible risk is capsular contracture, a negative response of the body to the foreign material. Rippling is also possible, caused by the natural waves of the implant visible in the skin. This is most common in thinner women and saline implants. Implant ruptures can occur on several occasions such as a car accident with harsh impact. Pain is normal to a certain extend. If the patient is feeling severe pain weeks after surgery, there may be a more serious problem such as infection or rejection of the body. There is also a slight risk of alteration of the nipple and breast sensation. In some patients, there is temporary loss of nipple sensation while others experience permanent loss. There is no definite way of preventing this. There are others breast augmentation risks possibles. For more specific personal concerns, you should discuss this with your plastic surgeon.

Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Augmentation Procedure

For starters, your doctor will always take your opinion into consideration when discussing your goals and the look you want to achieve after any kind of procedure even though a variety of things need to be take into consideration. Your doctor may show you pictures of previous patients with similar figures as yours and recommend a certain size. Other doctors may recommend to take matters into your own hands and perform a “rice test” on yourself in order to have an idea of the amount of CC’s that will be most suitable and appropriate for you.

Pregnancy should not harm the implants by any means, however, as the breast grows and shrinks with pregnancy, sagging may occur and to correct this, you would indeed need a breast lift or bigger implants.

No. All of these creams have hormones, which might appear to be working, but they can also make you gain weight, irritate your skin, cause acne, and many other things alike. Their results- however miniscule they might be- are not permanent. This means that breast augmentation is the only method that is safe, fast, and permanent. Not to mention affordable.

Both implants tend to feel natural after surgery, though they have their own individual draw backs and benefits to each individual patient. Make sure you reach out to your doctor and ask him for personal opinions if you don’t know which one will suit you best.
