There are many people who are not happy with the way that various parts of their bodies look. They are apprehensive about pursuing cosmetic surgery because they are concerned about the risk of complications. However, there is a lot of disinformation about these procedures, especially on the Internet. It is important to know the facts about a cosmetic procedure before you decide to have it performed. This article will take a look specifically at the surgical procedure known as an Abdominoplasty, more commonly known as a tummy tuck. The information is meant to educate people about this procedure so they can determine if it is right for them.

What is a tummy tuck?

A tummy tuck procedure is performed for the purpose of recreating a waistline that has been stretched, the removal of excess bulk and to greatly reduce the appearance of an abdomen that is protruding. There are people that, for whatever reason, are unable to eliminate the rolls of fat on their belly. No matter how much exercise and dieting they do, it does not make a difference. There are also women who have the appearance of being pregnant when they are not. Needless to say, this is not the way that these women want to go through their lives. A tummy tuck can get their body back into the shape they want. They will experience an increase in self-esteem and feel more confident in social situations.

How can you tell if a tummy tuck procedure is a good option for you?

In order for a doctor to determine of a tummy tuck is the right option for a patient, there are three primary anatomic components that he or she must consider. These are the fat, muscle and skin of the patient.

This procedure will be a good option if there is laxity of the abdominal muscle and excess skin. This is because a tummy tuck will reduce the excess of lower abdominal skin. However, if the patient has a minimal amount of skin excess, and if the primary component that is present is fat, a tummy tuck would not be an ideal option. In cases such as these, the patient would be better off having a liposuction procedure.

There are patients who will have fat, lax muscle and excess skin present. In these cases, the patient often requests that all three issues are fixed by liposuction of the abdomen and a tummy tuck procedure. However, it is not considered safe to perform liposuction of the abdomen that is aggressive along with a tummy tuck because of considerations such as preserving the blood supply to allow proper healing.

The issue of scarring is an important one that all patients must carefully consider prior to a tummy tuck. The scarring that will occur after this procedure can often be quite extensive. Scars on the patient will be from one hip to the other. While it is common for scars to improve in appearance and fade as time goes by, they will be permanent and partially visible forever. Therefore, the person must decide if getting the tummy tuck is worth the scarring that will occur.

A tummy tuck can change the lives of the patients who are good candidates for it. These people can get back a part of their life they thought was lost forever. They can hit the beach and be proud of their body once again.
